As of 1999, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all employees be trained and certified prior to operating a forklift / powered industrial truck.  Re-certification is required at least once every three years. There are an estimated 101 fatalities and 94,570 injuries each year resulting from forklift accidents!

* OSHA estimates that adherence to the training requirements
in their current regulation will prevent 11 fatalities and 9,422
   injuries annually.

 * The agency estimates property damage savings in excess of $52

   million yearly.

 * Fines for non-compliance can exceed to $1,000 per employee
